    Average Cost Of CT Scan

What makes the cost of a CT scan confusing is that not all hospitals charge the same price. There is no universal price for a CAT scan and there are often a number of different factors to take into account before the final cost is calculated e.g. fees for the actual procedure and fees associated with the radiologist being paid to interpret the result.

If there are a number of nearby places that you could get a CAT scan performed, look into the cost at each of them. You may find that CT scan cost at one facility is far less than the CT scan price at another facility. Depending on whether you need a whole body CAT scan, one body part scanned or several, the cost can range between $300 and up to $6000 or more. You will find that CT scan prices in hospitals are higher than in other facilities with CAT scans, as they have more specialist staff associated with the procedure and tend to have more sophisticated CT equipment. The CT scan cost not only varies from facility to facility, it varies massively between U.S. states and for each CAT scan procedure. The more specialised a procedure is, the more expensive it is.

    What Is A CT Scan?

A CT scan is one of the many scanning procedures used by hospitals and a number of other facilities. Some may be wondering what is the difference between a CAT scan vs CT scan or why patients need an MRI vs CT scan. A CT scan and  a CAT scan are the same thing, and the difference between an MRI and a CT scan is that they show you different things. An MRI focuses on tendons and ligaments, while CT scans are better at focusing on other elements of the human body.

A CAT (CT) scan is performed by something called a computerised tomography scanner. It is similar to an X-Ray machine. Rather than just using one X-Ray beam to create an image, several beams from different angles are sent simultaneously to get a better understanding of problems within the human body. The images obtained from the CAT scan can be used to create a 3D image, as opposed to the 2D images that are created by using a simple X-Ray machine.

    Head CT Scan Cost

The average cost for a head CAT scan procedure in the U.S. varies. The cheapest minimum price for a head CAT scan is reported to be somewhere between $200 and $400, while the most expensive head CT scan price is approximately $5700.

    Dental CT Scan Cost

The average cost for a dental CAT scan procedure in the U.S. is $150.  A dental CAT scan procedure is not as common as other CAT scan procedures in hospitals as they are more commonly performed in dentist practices.

    Chest CT Scan Cost

The average cost for a chest CAT scan procedure in the U.S. is $1800. The cheapest minimum price for a chest CAT scan is approximately $1000 and the most expensive chest CT scan price is approximately $7,400.

    Heart CT Scan Cost

    Abdominal CT Scan Cost

The average cost for an abdominal CAT scan procedure in the U.S. is $2,100.  The cheapest minimum price for an abdominal CAT scan is approximately $1,600 and the most expensive abdominal CT scan price is approximately $8,200.

How Much Does a CT Scan Cost Without Insurance?

As you can see, CT scan costs vary widely. It depends on a number of factors including the type of CAT scan being performed.Without insurance, CT scan cost can be extremely high. Even if you have insurance, you are not always covered if you have to get whole body CT scans. This is because insurance companies need to see proof that the procedure was needed. If you’re looking for a low cost CT scan, the cheapest CAT scan types are whole body or whole area scans such as head, chest, abdomen etc.

    Pet CT Scan Cost

A Pet CT scan can refer to one of two things. It can refer to the procedurewhich is similar to an MRI or standard CAT scan, or the act of performing a CAT scan on a pet animal. The PET scan procedure can be used to detect subtle changes on a cellular level, whereas other medical scanning procedures are used to diagnose problems when they are at a later stage.

Lots of people are familiar with the performance of CT scans and other scanning procedures performed on humans, but they can also be performed in a veterinary setting. CAT scans are useful to determine the cause of neurological disorders i.e. seizures, diseases that cause behavioural changes and walking problems. A CAT scan is useful for diagnosing problems with a pet’s brain or spinal column.

CT scans are not just for humans, they can be performed on other animals too. Several veterinary facilities have CT scanning equipment which can help diagnose your pet’s health problems. Like CT scans for humans, pet scans don’t come cheap! You can expect to pay around the same price, if not more, for a CAT scan for you pet.

    Dog CT Scan Cost

The CT scan prices in veterinary practices tend to be more expensive than those in hospitals which are used by humans. CT scanners are not as widely available in the veterinary industry. Veterinary practices need to justify the costs of keeping a CT scanner running and employing the staff who are qualified to use it, so the procedure tends to cost more.

The amount you paid is definitely on the high bracket for an abdominal scan. It would have been good to research around your area to get a better idea of the prices there and like that know if the Richmond Virginia Hospital is taking advantage of you or if indeed what they charged you is average for the Richmond region.

Either I was completely taken advantage of from a Richmond Virginia Hospital or the figures published are very outdated. I challenged the charge and was denied adjustment being told that is the normal and customary charge for a Richmond area Hospital. Outrageous for an Obdominal only Scan.
